Gina Gibney’s all-female dance troupe deals with domestic violence both on the stage and off.

The most important work New York’s Gina Gibney Dance has planned for Portland this week may take place offstage.

Starting Thursday, the dance presenter White Bird will treat local audiences to three performances by the highly regarded troupe, which possesses “an almost literary sensitivity,” according to The New York Times.

But founder Gibney also remains on a parallel mission, one that began when she helped create the Women at Work Domestic Violence Project six years ago. That effort, which seeks to empower domestic abuse victims, involves workshops led by Gibney and her performers.

A Saturday event in which Gina Gibney Dance pairs with the local organization Healing Roots Village aims to bring together local artists, healers and survivors. It is one of several the company will participate in during its stay.

Gibney has created six acclaimed, evening-length works since the company she founded in 1991 was reorganized as an all-female troupe six years later. Gina Gibney Dance will make its Portland debut with 2005’s “unbounded,” which premiered at the Danspace Project in New York.
