JAZZ

Cathedral Park Jazz Festival

Portland’s longest-running free jazz gathering west of the Mississippi is a great way to expose yourself to the bountiful talent that exists in this region. This year’s event includes blues great Curtis Salgado, the extraordinary big band experience of the Portland Jazz Orchestra, the Krebsic Orkestar’s wild gypsy brass sounds and local chanteuse Linda Lee Michelet, among others. In addition to fantastic music, the festival also offers a great reason to make the pilgrimage to the beautiful but off-the-beaten-path Cathedral Park.

– Barbara Mitchell

6 p.m. Friday, 12 p.m. Saturday, 12 p.m. Sunday, July 18-20, Cathedral Park, 8676 N. Crawford St., 503-286-1312, free, all ages

CONCERTS

Chamber Music Northwest

The popular summer festival continues with “Mendelssohn and Moderns for Strings and Winds,” two concerts that feature the Orion String Quartet, the flavorful Imani Winds ensemble and Brooklyn-based violin virtuoso Catherine Cho.

On Saturday, a 20th anniversary celebration unites the Orion String Quartet with the acclaimed Miami String Quartet. The two ensembles play selections that include Mozart’s String Quartet in D Minor, K. 421 and Alfred Schnittke’s “Moz-Art for Two Violins.”
