MUSIC

Pickathon piles on the tunes

It’s not often a festival offers something new, but Portland’s Pickathon —now in its 11th year and happily ensconced at nearby Pendarvis Farm —has played a huge part in the burgeoning indie roots scene.

This year, the musical lineup —which spans six stages —includes everything from indie rock like Blitzen Trappen and Dr. Dog to veteran punk/roots icon John Doe, up-and-coming alt-country artist Justin Townes Earle and old-timers such as Dale Watson and Big Sandy & His Fly Rite Boys. There’s camping, and a long list of musical, art and outdoor activities for the kids.

12 p.m. Friday, July 31, 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, Pendarvis Farm, 6581 S.E. Hagen Road, Happy Valley, www.pickathon.com, $80 Friday, $90 Saturday, $80 Sunday, $190 weekend pass, $15 one-day parking pass, $30 weekend parking pass, all ages

A Jewel at the zoo

Singer-songwriter Jewel plays the beautiful Oregon Zoo Amphitheater, surely to show off her various genre. She splashed on the scene with “Who Will Save Your Soul?” and “You Were Meant For Me” 14 years ago, but has since broadened her music with the country “Perfectly Clear” album and independent “Lullaby” this year.

7 p.m., Friday, July 31 Oregon Zoo Amphitheater, 4001 S.W. Canyon Road, 503-226-1561, $22.50 (Ticketmaster outlets)

FESTIVAL

Parkrose Cruise-In & Festival

More than 100 collector cars will be on display at the eighth annual festival. Other activities include a “kid’s area,” raffle, dunk tank, car trophies and live music by Butch and the Buicks. People also can bet how long two donated cars can run without oil until their engines break. It’s a fundraiser for Parkrose High School. This year’s event also will honor Aldo Rossi, a longtime and well-respected member of the community who passed away on July 21.

9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, Northeast Sandy Boulevard between 105th and 112th avenues, www.parkrosecruisein.com, free
