Eye-pleasing gems also are said to heal

The next time you see your doctor about depression, a bad back or tension headaches, wouldn’t it be terrific if he or she prescribed a beautiful necklace to ease your discomfort?

According to Michael Katz and his team at Gemisphere in Northwest Portland, a necklace crafted from gemstones may be the answer to what ails you. Katz says the therapeutic benefits generated by gemstones have the ability to neutralize physical and emotional problems.

“We are spiritual beings, and as such, we have the ability to radiate,” he says. “Sometimes you see people who are radiant, and sometimes you see people who are more clouded.

“In general, the people who are more radiant have fewer ‘blockages’ within them. You can use the light and frequency of the gemstone to neutralize those blockages,” Katz says. “Different gemstones will address different issues, and (ultimately) make us more radiant beings.”

More than meets the eye

Katz launched Gemisphere in Boulder, Colo., in 1988, and moved the company to Portland in 1990. Gemisphere now has customers in every state and 55 countries.

Katz was a jeweler in Tucson, Ariz., when the seeds of Gemisphere germinated.

“I knew there was more to gems than meets the eye,” he says. “It was clear from the way that people were attracted to them Ñ just in the jewelry store Ñ that there was more than just an emotional connection. There was an inner radiance that people knew intuitively but couldn’t fully express.”

After Katz moved to Boulder, he introduced his theories to a clinical kinesiologist, whose studies supported Katz’s belief that the vibrations of gemstones could affect different components of the physical body.

Gems in the blue and purple family, including amethyst and lapis, address mental issues. Aquamarine, for example, is said to bring deep relaxation and liquidity to the mind and body.

Green gems are used to promote physical wellness; emeralds are said to neutralize the disharmonies that cause disease.

Finally, reddish stones relate to issues of the heart. Wear carnelian to nourish your emotions and bring optimism into your life, suggests Ada Gonz‡lez, a naturopathic physician and clinical resource specialist at Gemisphere.

Blocks and rocks

There’s no reason to limit yourself to one particular gemstone. Katz explains that each blockage calls for a unique gem.

“It’s similar to the way that at different times one could benefit from different herbs. By properly combining different therapeutic gemstones, one can benefit from different gemstones at different times,” he says.
