OSU pitcher recovering from an apparent hit-and-run

UPDATE: Police do not plan further investigation

ADVERTISEMENTS

A pitcher for the Oregon State University baseball team is recovering from injuries suffered in what his family termed a hit-and-run accident on Southeast 16th Avenue and Hawthorne Street around midnight July 12.

Rob Summers, 20, was in serious but stable condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center, according to a statement released Saturday afternoon by his family.

“While no one knows the details of the accident, we are certain he was hit by a moving vehicle that then fled the scene,” the statement read. “If anyone saw or heard anything that night, we urge them to come forward and contact the police.”

Portland police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz said Monday that "the Police Bureau is not conducting an investigation because witnesses could not provide information to conclude a crime occurred, and officers could not find a crime scene."

Schmautz said that if anyone, including Summers, is able to provide police with evidence of a crime, an investigation could be re-opened.

The OSU baseball team won the College World Series in June. Summers appeared in one game for the Beavers in 2006 as a redshirt freshman. He pitched one-third of an inning.

He has been playing this summer for the Aloha Knights of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League. The Knights, 12-10, play their home games at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. Summers has made two appearances for the Knights, pitching two total innings and earning two saves. He got out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam on July 1 to preserve a 3-0 home victory over the Kelowna (B.C.) Falcons, and in his last outing, he pitched the ninth inning to save a 3-0 road win over the Bellingham (Wash.) Bells.

Dan Segel, general manager of the Aloha Knights, visited Summers in the hospital on Thursday.

"He's in pretty good spirits, all things considered," Segel said.
