A Beaverton cheerleading coach said Tuesday afternoon he was not guilty of federal charges of sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl aboard a late April flight from Chicago to Portland.
David Aaron Chatman, 32, who lives in a Rock Creek apartment, was arrested by FBI agents Monday evening. He was arraigned Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Paul Papak.
If convicted, Chatman could face a maximum of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He was indicted under federal law because the alleged abuse took place on a domestic airline flight.
Chatman has been a part-time varsity cheerleading coach at Southridge High School since September 2003. He has been suspended pending the outcome of the federal investigation and indictment.
Beaverton School District spokeswoman Maureen Wheeler said the district planned to notify Southridge students and parents to find out if there were additional victims.
“We are doing a notice out to all Southridge families,” Wheeler said.
