Suspect, K-9 fall off cliff during police search

UPDATE: Dog undergoes leg surgery

ADVERTISEMENTS

A man with a history of sex crime offenses who was wanted on a parole violation plunged over a cliff just outside of Troutdale early Thursday morning during a chase by police and a police dog.

The dog, who had engaged the suspect in a struggle, also fell off the 100-foot cliff.

John Clark Milan, 47, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment; the dog, Koda, also was injured and taken to an emergency veterinary clinic. On Thursday night, Koda had surgery on his leg. According to Gresham police, his recovery time will be four to six months and it's too early to tell if he will be able to return to duty.

The incident began when an off-duty Troutdale officer saw Milan walking along Southeast Stark Street at Southeast Kerslake just east of Troutdale around 11 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect disappeared from sight, but the officer found clues leading him to believe Milan had fled north into the hilly wooded area above the Sandy River.

The officer requested assistance from other officers, including three members of the Gresham Police K-9 unit and the Gresham SWAT team.

About 1:30 a.m. Thursday, one of the search teams located the suspect and the K-9 attached to the unit struggled with Milan. The two fell over a cliff and were found about two hours later. Rescuers from Gresham Fire and Emergency Services rescued both man and dog.

Milan was wanted on a felony warrant for a parole violation. Other charges are pending.

And whether Mr. Milan kicks the bucket.

The K-9 units pay their own way in our society every day, but the Mr. Milans in this world cost us billions in both money and ruined lives.

Re: Suspect, K-9 fall off cliff during police search

Interesting observation- Gresham Police love to accept donations for K-9's, but rarely fund them. GPD Management does not care for K-9's. However, if you ask, I am sure you would get a different answer. What happened to their drug K-9?

Re: Suspect, K-9 fall off cliff during police search

The dog's just got a leg injury, they said it wasn't life threatining for either man, or dog...so, it's not a matter of the dog kicking the bucket, but rather, being retired...

Um i hate to correct you but this dog was trained to and has attacked humans, retiring these kind of animals generaly means putting them down.

Re: Suspect, K-9 fall off cliff during police search

Do Not Confuse with Richard.

Read the papers, read the websites and stay informed...

Gresham Police have a drug-sniffing dog already at work. It is part of some Neighborhood team they just funded.

Off-duty officers rarely "pursue", but rather watch and report (try going to a citizens academy and learn). And what do you expect him to do, let the wanted felon with tendencies to prey on children just walk away because the cop was off the clock? C'mon.

This dog, Koda, won't be put down. Seriously, it's a trained police dog, practically designed to utilize senses more effectively than humans and help capture suspects, lessening the risk to human officers. Using it's teeth to help bring down fat wanted guys is part of its job.

Retiring these dogs means the same as thoroughbreds "retiring" to live on farms or with their handlers. Why would they put the dog down? What's wrong with you?

I hope the dog is okay. I hope the suspect got what he deserves. Hopefully the dog crunched his broken arm, not the fall. Google him in California, he looks like a convicted sex offender, good riddance.

You're an idiot. If you were in trouble you'd be glad to have an officer help you...Oops. Sorry. I'm off duty. handle it yourself.

Re: Suspect, K-9 fall off cliff during police search

I read a post on "why would a off-duty cop be looking for "perps" or whatever you call them. Well with what i have read about this story is that the Man is accused of sexually abusing a 11-12 year old in southern california. So i say good going for the police officer that remembered what this man looked like from a picture at his office that he doesnt even spend a lot of time in (being a cop and all)
