Pirouz Sedaghaty was arrested Wednesday at the Portland International Airport by agents of the FBI, the IRS criminal investigations division, and Immigrant and Customs Enforcement after he arrived from Frankfort Germany.
Sedaghaty, 49-year-old former Ashland resident, who is also known as Pete Seda, had been previously charged by a federal grand jury in Eugene with conspiracy to defraud the United States and filing a false tax return on behalf of the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation. Sedaghaty faces up to eight years in prison and $500,000 in fines.
In September 2004 the United States Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control place the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation on the list of “specially designated global terrorists” pursuant to the United States law.
Sedaghty was transported by federal agents to the federal courthouse in Eugene where he is to be arraigned Wednesday.
