Autistic woman says Jason K. Faulk took advantage of her

Portland Police officer Jason K. Faulk has a problem: a pharmacy security video that allegedly shows him buying an autistic woman a “morning after” pill to prevent pregnancy.

Faulk, 33, has been on paid administrative leave since Sept. 11 while under criminal investigation by the police bureau’s Sexual Assault Detail. Chief Sizer confirmed these details in a press release issued Friday morning (see press release below).The investigation is based on allegations that the 10-year veteran took advantage of a vulnerable woman whom he first encountered while answering her police call.

Faulk’s criminal defense lawyer, Larry Matasar, declined to comment and said his client would have no comment. Prosecutors also declined to comment on the investigation, as did police spokesman Brian Schmautz.

Detective Susan Fachini, who is conducting the investigation, also declined comment.

The Faulk case was initiated by an autistic woman who her lawyer, Beth Creighton, describes as “emotionally challenged” and in her late 20s.

At press time, there had been no arrest in the case, and Faulk had not yet told his version of events to investigators. Placing Faulk on leave suggests that there is evidence, such as the video, that substantiates the woman’s claims. A county grand jury is scheduled to meet Wednesday to decide whether to issue a criminal indictment of Faulk.

Creighton said the alleged misconduct began when her client contacted police to file a report in the beginning of June. Faulk responded to the call, took the woman’s information, and returned with the report late that night.

According to Creighton, Faulk stopped by her client’s residence on a regular basis over the next six weeks, usually late at night and “ostensibly” for follow-up.

The two allegedly had sex twice in the period from mid-July to early August. Following the second time, Creighton said, they went to a pharmacy and a security video appears to show him paying for the “morning-after” pill.
