Portland businessman Sho Dozono (center) officially registers within the City Hall auditor's office for his bid at being the next mayor of Portland. City Elections Officer Andrew Carlstrom (right) awaits the form for processing as the Dozono family and friends are there for support.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Surrounded by family and his closest advisers, Portland businessman Sho Dozono at City Hall this morning officially entered the race to be Portland's next mayor.

"This is a big day for me," he said, while vowing to be the "citizens' candidate."

In challenging the frontrunner, City Commissioner Sam Adams, Dozono hopes to qualify for city's public financing program that would provide him with at least $172,500 in campaign funding.

To do so, he needs gather the 1,500 separate $5 contributions, each with the signature of a registered Portland voter. Dozono said he has "a couple of hundred" volunteers ready to gather signatures.

The owner of Azumano Travel, Dozono is better known for his philanthropy, such as leading the "Flight for Freedom" relief effort to New York City in October 2001.

He said he is using the city's public financing route to prove that he will be beholden to nobody.

"I made a commitment that if I don't qualify, I will not run for mayor," he said.

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

Yeah! It will be refreshing to have a politician that is not beholden to anyone. Although they all start out that way and eventually succumb to the pressure. I hope he keeps his word. Good luck Sho Dozono!

I'm surprised Sam the Man wasn't trying to hold the door to the Auditor's office closed.

It may have been the best chance he had to not lose.

He's a bleeding heart liberal but I'll vote for him over Sam for sure! Hey, I hope Sam doesn't pull out and stay on the council, if he loses he'll be out of politics for at least a little while.

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

good if you are smart portland you will elect dozono instead of that tired old sam adams.of course portland wont elect someone like dozono who unlike adams has exp running a business and knows what he is doing.portland wont elect anyone with business and common sense.just wont happen here because most of portlands residents are very stupid and easily brainwashed.

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

This is great news for PDX. Sam is arrogant and a careless and wasteful steward of public resources. Portland deserves a better choice. Mr. Dozono is passionate about this city and cares deeply about all citizens - not just those who live in the Pearl.

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

Cynical as I am, I say let him in. The idea that business and government can be run similarly is quite humorous though. I mean.......we voted the Republicans in to "clean up" the federal government......and to run it like a business. Well they did..... a bad one.

They also ran everything through their buddies. Then fleeced the people who they were supposed to represent and are paid to protect. Great, just great.

That isn't saying that Sho is at all like that. That's why I say give a chance.

Finally, to those of you that are so short sighted or inexperienced. You can't expect government to run at a profit, it's just not possible nor should it be. Maybe some of you meant to say that you'd like it to be effective running at close to a zero balance.

Anyway, I've personally seen Sho in action.......look through the pomp and circumstance to see what is actually there. Sho does alot "for Sho", and that isn't a problem. He just isn't as benevolent or philanthropic as he appears to be.

Those of you who brought up water bureau and DMV fiascos and how they would have been treated if it happened in the private sector failed to add one important detail. In addition to being fired, both would have likely received multi-million dollar severence packages.

I worked for Sho Dozono for over 15 years. I went on to

a new career 8 years ago. Sho is the kind of leader

Portland has always needed, he is very honest and

cares deeply about people. I would follow him anywhere!

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

Apparently no one read the article about Sho Dozono taking over a million dollars from a two year old (from

a trust fund left to the child by his deceased father)and commingling funds with Azumano Travel business accounts. What kind of leader is that ? I guess the kind that demonstrates; will do what it takes to survive,at any cost.SCARY!

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

Dear Kennedy, won't it be a relief to have someone running the city that knows how to pay thier bills/debts, let alone the organization's that they are running? I think it will be great to have a leader running the city that spends their time in countries (Japan) doing international business deals, versus someone that hangs out in FRANCE (a real big Oregon trading partner...not) running up their credit cards, that they can't pay, thinking about ways to bring free bicycles to the derilicts of the City.

Thank the gods we have a saviour, the choice is clear:

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

I guess Sho could have filed for bankruptcy instead.

That's what Sam Adams did when he maxed out his credit cards (personal bankruptcy). Sam eventually went back and paid off his discharged debts: just before he decided to run for the City Council. It is the principle that matters, don't you think?

Vote for Sho, or let Sam Adams bankrupt the City? Tough call.

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

I applaud Sho's entry into the race for Mayor. I have known him for over six years through his work issues related to education, business, and his civic good deeds (I went to both NYC and New Orleans on those much lauded trips) and have seen how inspirational and hard working he is, and how people thrive while working alongside him. He is an outstanding Portlander.

I also have been acquainted with Sam Adams for over 10 years in his work at City Hall and I know plenty of people who comment under their breath about what a mean spirited person he is. Does he get things done? Probably some things. However, there are projects that get stymied by his lack of collaboration. Anyway, this is not about Sam.

This is about Sho Dozono for the next Mayor of Portland! He has the vision and the know how and the common sense and the spirit to make a great Mayor and one that you will be proud of.

It's about time a city elected someone for Mayor who has run a successful business. And especially someone who cares so much for his city. Sho Dozono is a class act and Portland will be lucky to have him as it's Mayor

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

Portland is a city of smart, educated citizens. I hope that all voters take the time to look under the hood with this candidate.

Yes, he's a businessman, of a privately held business that is not required to publish profitability, debt or revenues. There's no way to really say how successful he is at running that business and where the cash comes from in time of need to meet payroll and other obligations, when the cash flow isn't there.

Yes, he's led trips to disaster areas under the guise of support. He's a travel agent. He makes money booking trips to destinations. This is not good will.

How well organized and PROFITABLE (or even break-even) are some of the other public events he's undertaken in the last 15-20 years? Ask the tough questions, Portland. I think you'll be surprised at what you find.

Re: Sho Dozono files for Mayor

Glass House..............Its one thing to not be responsible with one's own personal finances and another

to use a small childs resources left in your hands by a

deceased parent in hopes that you would help the child

not bail out one's own company for one's own gain! Please...........not quite apples for apples, don't you

think? Sho did offer Azumano stock instead of paying the

Childs trust back..........hum, I bet that stock was worthless then and now. Sounds like a scam artist at work!
