A 33-year-old Northeast Portland man was airlifted out of the Mount Hood wilderness, after getting lost on a hike Sunday afternoon.
Chad Tabler called 911 on his cell phone about 6:15 p.m. Sunday night, telling dispatchers he was lost.
Search teams mobilized, and were able to locate Tabler around 5 a.m. Monday morning, in the Hunchback Mountain area south of Zig Zag.
A Coast Guard helicopter gave Tabler and search crews a ride to the Welches Grade School parking lot, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's office.
Tabler was cold but otherwise uninjured. The Sheriff's Office says he was not well equipped to spend the night outdoors. heading out on his hike wearing only a t-shirt, shorts, hiking boots, and a lightweight fleece jacket.
Shorts, T-shirt, hiking boots and lightweight jacket. No mention of water, or any other provisions. Thank goodness he remembered his cell phone so the tax payers could bail his butt out. This idiot should have been left to figure a route to his car on his own. I am sick and tired of all these looney tunes who don't have the brains God gave a knat!

One would think with all the news stories about climbing and hiking tragedies plus television survival shows that no one would be foolish enough to take off on trails not yet open because of record snowfall wearing shorts and a t-shirt. But yes, someone again tried to win the Darwin award.

do you think idiots like this guy would stop being so stupid and doing this kind of thing if we stopped sending out search and rescue teams to find them in their shorts & t-shirts? seriously, i'm all for saving people's lives, but you make a conscious choice when you decide to head into the mountains wearing shorts and a t-shirt and not bringing any water with you. what a fool.

WOW...it's good to know that everyone here is so perfect! He did have water if you'd do your research a little further. EVERY ONE IS GUILTY OF MAKING A POOR CHOICE NOW AND AGAIN...we are human...when these "POOR CHOICES" are made we can only hope one will learn from it, so climb off your high horses and lets just be grateful that the mountain didn't claim someone else's life. I am happy that he was found and able to go home to live life with his little boy (single father of a 1 yr old boy)!

When will some simple provision be made to recover costs associated with these rescues of "by their own choice" adventurers? Sadly, this foolish misuse of taxpayers money will only continue, encouraged by the constant flow of news coverage showing "saved by, everythings OK" stories.
