Got spin? Mayor-elect Adams does

Want to hear some good spin control? On the afternoon of June 3, Sources Say asked Mayor-elect Sam Adams about a plan for the city to sell the bulk of its SmartMeter parking pay stations and then lease them back.

Why, we asked, had a City Council vote on the plan been postponed one month, to late July?

Adams replied that he and City Auditor Gary Blackmer thought it would be a good idea to postpone the vote until Blackmer took a look at the plan. In fact, Adams said, he asked Blackmer to review the proposal in detail.

To hear him talk, delaying the vote might well have been Adams’ idea.

In reality, however, Blackmer had sent an e-mail to the council that morning formally asking for the vote to be postponed so he could review the plan. Politically speaking, the request left Adams little choice but to comply.

Lame duck Potter passes appointments on to Adams

Although Sam Adams won’t become mayor for another eight months, he’s already taking over the appointments on one important board – and passing the bu– oops, we mean delegating – on another.

Outgoing Mayor Tom Potter has asked Adams to fill the two Portland Development Commission board of director positions that come up in July.

Because the board has only five members, the appointments will allow Adams to put his stamp on the PDC well before becoming mayor in January. Adams sent out a news release June 9 seeking nominees.
