Schrader will succeed husband in Senate District 20 post

Kurt Schrader is in nation’s capital; Martha Schrader heads to Salem

Clackamas County Commissioners appointed colleague Martha Schrader on Friday to fill the state Senate seat vacated by her husband after he was elected to Congress.

Schrader, a Canby Democrat and Clackamas County commissioner, won the votes of all four fellow commissioners. She will replace husband Kurt Schrader in Senate District 20. He is moving on to represent Oregon’s 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House.

“I love this county,” Schrader said after the appointment was made. “I hope to serve not only constituents of district 20,” but to work for the betterment of the entire state.

She also said that with her experience as a county commissioner, as a Legislative aid for seven years and in working closely with her husband, who chaired the Ways and Means Committee that oversees the state budget, she is ready to hit the ground running.

“After six years of county budget experience, I think it’s just bigger agencies and more zeroes,” she said of managing the state budget.

Martha Schrader won the nod over Toby Forsberg and Tom Civiletti. Clackamas County Democratic Party precinct committee people selected the three nominees.

Forsberg lost a close race for a state House seat in November to Republican Bill Kennemer. He is former president of the Oregon City Chamber of Commerce, and works as marketing coordinator for Clackamas County Business and Community Services.
