Oregon’s unemployment rate hit 9 percent in December, up from the 8 percent mark posted November.
At the same time, the state lost 9,700 jobs, following a similar drop of 8,400 jobs in November.
The state’s unemployment rate has risen rapidly and substantially during the past six months after remaining stable throughout the first half of 2008 at near 5.5 percent.
The U.S. unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent in December, from 6.8 percent in November.
SENATORS PLAN HEARINGS Senate Democrats will hold hearings next month on options to help out-of-work Oregonians covered by unemployment insurance.
With the state’s December unemployment rate hitting 9 percent, members of the Senate Committee on Commerce and Workforce Development will discuss in February expansion of eligibility as well as the expected arrival of additional federal money to the state’s unemployment insurance fund.
