Varoom! Metro moved at NASCAR speed Thursday afternoon, kicking the region’s federal stimulus plan into high gear by quickly approving $102 million in Portland-area transportation projects.
The council’s vote opens the floodgates for federal transportation dollars, creating as many as 3,500 jobs, according to Metro officials.
“This is a very good day for the entire region,” said Metro Council President David Bragdon. “This stimulus package will help create immediate jobs and fund a variety of projects that accomplish a broad range of improvements.”
Western Washington County made out well in the vote. Forest Grove will get $1.6 million to upgrade sidewalks, streetlights and curbs throughout downtown. Cornelius will spend $350,000 to improve street surfaces on Holladay Street, 10th and Fourth avenues, and $50,000 to buy benches and fix curbs and utility connections along Adair Street.
Hillsboro was awarded $2.35 million to bridge a funding gap in the construction of the second phase of Pacific University’s Health Professions Campus.
Other major stimulus allocations include $2 million for the repaving of Southeast 39th Avenue in Portland between Holgate Boulevard and Woodstock Street; $1 million for bicycle lane striping and signage; and $2.75 million to widen Hogan Road between Glisan and Stark streets to four lanes with a center turn lane.
