FISH
ADVERTISEMENTS
No one should be surprised if the relationship between City Commissioners Randy Leonard and Nick Fish seems chilled these days. Although Leonard supported Fish in the 2007 special election (which Fish won), the two disagree about plans to bring professional soccer to town.
Leonard is the most outspoken new-stadium advocate on the City Council, while Fish is against spending public funds to remodel PGE Park and build a new stadium for the Portland Beavers. But Leonard thinks Fish crossed the line when he spoke at the rally against building the stadium in Lents Park June 18.
The rally took place before the Lents Urban Renewal Advisory Committee meeting on the proposal. Although Fish left before the committee meeting began, some of those who attended the rally jeered Leonard when he testified in support of the idea.
“I was not so much surprised at the opposition as shocked by the tenor – and disappointed that Nick would do anything to encourage it,” Leonard said.
The City Council appears headed toward a July 8 up-or-down vote on renaming 39th Avenue after Cesar E. Chavez.
Hundreds of Portlanders jammed the Council Chambers for the June 23 evening hearing to express their support and opposition for the proposal. Many of those who testified against the change argued that the council should name something else after the Hispanic civil rights and labor leader. Ideas included the planned transit bridge over the Willamette River, a park, a school and a farmers market.
Several supporters dismissed the suggestions, however. Some noted that during the past 20 years, the council has renamed streets after African-Americans and a Japanese-American, but no street is named after a Latino leader.
“We are asking for just one street out of 4,000 to honor an American hero and civil rights leader,” said Armando Gonzalez, a member the Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard Committee.
Yay, Fish! Boo, Leonard!

Randy should be watching whether he "crosses the line" before he comments on others.

Poor Randy got his feelings hurt. Too bad he has three years left in politics.
Hey Randy, you can resign any old time. We won't miss you.

Mr. Leonard is a smart guy. Why he chose to back what was clearly an idiotic idea is beyond logic. Like others have already stated, that should be enuf to kill any future hope Mr. Leonard has for re-election.

A damn great question..."Why would he back such a stupid idea?"
Love to hear comments on that question.

Hmm, siphoning off money used to help struggling Portlanders avoid foreclosure in the worst economy of our lifetimes, to build a $60+ million minor-league ballpark in the middle of a residential neighborhood on the ass-end of Portland. And chew up valuable open greenspace in the process.
I'm not very shocked that people would have strong opinions about it.
