Oregon State Police have arrested a 56-year-old Sandy man after the sport utility vehicle he was driving struck two teenagers Thursday night as they tried to cross Highway 211 near Colton.
State troopers have accused Danny Thomas Jones of driving while intoxicated in the incident. Jones was lodged in the Clackamas County Jail on charges of third- and fourth-degree assault, in addition to the driving while intoxicated charge.
The accident seriously injured 17-year-old Thomas M. Stephens, who is in intensive care at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital. Also injured was 16-year-old Destiny York, who was treated and released from Legacy Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin.
According to state police, the two teenagers were crossing the highway at about 7:30 p.m. in a marked crosswalk during halftime of a high school football game. A 2007 Suzuki SUV driven by Jones was traveling east on the highway when the accident occurred.
The collision threw both teens several feet in the air.
The highway was closed in the area for about three hours.
