Police tap into online crime alert system

Fairview and Troutdale citizens looking for a real-time sense of criminal activity that may be going on around them now have a Web site to clue them in.

The neighboring cities’ police departments are participating in CrimeReports.com, a free service that provides neighborhood crime data and sends neighborhood-specific alerts. Fairview and Troutdale join the Gresham Police Department in East County police departments incorporating their crime data into the technology.

Located at www.crimereports.com, the site begins with a United States map and home page that leads users to visuals and data related to their own neighborhoods. The free service allows citizens to receive automatic daily, weekly or monthly e-mail alerts when crimes occur near their residence, office or school.

Citizens can also view reported crime activity on a user-friendly map for any location within Troutdale or Fairview jurisdictions. Crime incident data is updated nightly and includes the type of incident, date of occurrence, location, distance from individual addresses, case numbers and a brief explanation of the incident.

Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson, who is spearheading an effort to incorporate crime analysis capabilities into his 24-officer department, praises CrimeReports as a valuable service for his officers as well as engaged citizens.

“CrimeReports.com will prove particularly valuable to those in the community who want to stay informed about what is going on in their neighborhoods,” he says, “and empower citizens to work with the police department to address neighborhood crime issues.”
