Bike Alliance survey: Safety is top concern for two-wheeled commuters

Most frequent riders come from North, Northeast and Southeast Portland

A new survey by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance found that most bike commuters were from North, Northeast and Southeast Portland because they considered their streets safe for riding.

North, Northeast and Southeast Portland are the hotbeds of bicycling in the city, according to a survey released Monday by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.

The survey found that people living in those pasts of town travel more by bike than anywhere else in Portland and Vancouver, Wash.

In addition, 14 percent of bicyclists in North, Northeast and Southeast Portland say they don't own automobiles, compared to 10 percent of other bicyclists.

The alliance is a non-profit membership group that works to promote bicycling and improve conditions for bicyclists Oregon and Southwest Washington. More than 2,000 people participated in the survey, “Bicycling Perceptions and Experiences in Oregon and Southwest Washington.”

The city of Portland is seeking public comment on its draft Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030. The plan is intended to to make bicycling a critical component of the city’s transportation system and a significant element of its sustainable green economy.

The Portland Planning Commission will host a hearing on the plan at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Room 2500A, 1900 S.W. Fourth Ave. A hearing before City Council is tentatively scheduled for the evening of Jan. 20, 2010.
