A multitude of groups in Portland labor each day to make life better for the community. The causes they support include everything from encouraging education to promoting the arts to providing food to the hungry.

But during the current economic downturn, these groups and the people they help are suffering. According to an Oregon Community Foundation report released just this week, the demand for services from nonprofit organizations has increased an average of 12 percent in the past year, while donations to these groups are declining.

One way to help charities is to make the public aware of their needs and activities. So starting with this issue of the Portland Tribune, we are introducing a “Worthy Causes” column that will highlight a handful of the charitable events upcoming in the Portland area.

Groups that want their events considered for the Worthy Causes column, which will appear on Page 2A in the future, can e-mail Jennifer Anderson at worthycauses@portlandtribune.com.

Items that, for space reasons, are not included in the Portland Tribune’s print edition may be added to the online version, which will appear at www.portlandtribune.com.

• The Mittleman Jewish Community Center and Portland Jewish Academy are celebrating the dedication of a renovated campus. Made possible by a $15 million capital campaign under then-board chair Jordan D. Schnitzer, the Schnitzer Family Campus will be dedicated on Nov. 8, from 2 to 3 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public and will feature a performance by the academy’s middle school choir, a blessing and light refreshments.

Where: 6651 S.W. Capitol Highway.

• One of Portland’s more charitable musicians, Michael Allen Harrison, will provide “A Night of Thanks — A Night of Giving” on behalf of the Portland Metro Salvation Army on Nov. 17.

Harrison has performed for people such as President Bill Clinton, Al Gore and the Dalai Lama, but in this case, he will play alongside a select group of the Salvation Army’s Gresham Corps music students. Proceeds will benefit the corps’ afterschool and youth music programs.

Cost: $25 per person, $40 for a couple.
