In the battle of the campaign kickoff parties, Rex Burkholder easily matched Bob Stacey when he launched his run for Metro Council president.

Metro Councilor Burkholder drew several hundred people to the ballroom at the sustainably designed Left Bank building last Friday. Stacey, the former executive director of the land use watchdog group 1000 Friends of Oregon, held his party on Oct. 7 at the Holcene nightclub.

Burkholder’s party featured more government types than the one thrown by Stacey – including State Rep. Jackie Dingfelder (D-Dist. 23), Metro Councilor Rod Park, city commissioners Nick Fish and Randy Leonard, and former Multnomah County Chair Bev Stein. But Stacey has so far raised more money that Burkholder – just over $60,000 this year, compared with Burkholder’s nearly $44,000.

Still no word from former Hillsboro Mayor Tom Hughes on whether he will enter the race. Although Hughes says Metro needs to broaden its perspective on regional issues, he says he is also enjoying working part time for the Tonkon Torp law firm.

Portland paranoia justified?
