ADVERTISEMENTS
A hiker on Monday discovered what appeared to be a human skull on the side of a steep hill near Sandy.
A 1960s-era pickup was discovered crashed about 40 feet uphill from where the skull was found.
The pickup, which appeared to have been there for decades, was about 150 feet below the nearest road, according to search and rescue team members who had descended to the site.
Authorities are not yet identifying the exact location of the discovery because the search is ongoing and they don't want anyone to compromise their investigation.
Sheriff’s deputies, the county medical examiner and 10 members of the Pacific Northwest Search & Rescue team descended to the site Monday afternoon to begin an investigation.
Deputies and the S&R team borrowed a strong rope 300 feet long from Fire Chief Gary McQueen because the site is difficult to reach and far below the roadway.
S&R-team members assisted the medical examiner and deputies in their descent to the site to take photos and do a cursory investigation.
