Summer is here, but there’s no rest for the weary fundraisers. Local nonprofits are forging ahead with events in every shape and form, holding shoe drives, fun runs and even karaoke contests to benefit the community’s most needy.
PedXshoe Shangri-La, a shoe boutique on Northeast Alberta, is collecting shoes to benefit Dress for Success Oregon, which provides interview-appropriate clothing to low-income women seeking employment.
The shoe drive runs through June 20. People who bring clean, gently used, scuff-free and ready-to-wear shoes to donate will receive 20 percent off any regular-priced item at the store.
In the current economy, the demand for Dress for Success’ services has increased 150 percent in the past five months, the organization says. PedX is at 2230 N.E. Alberta St.

The YWCA of Greater Portland will hold its second-annual “Off-key karaoke bash” fundraiser on June 26 to support its mission to provide safety, opportunity and independence for women and their families.
The event will include karaoke and no-host cocktails. Doors open at 8 p.m.; the contest runs from 9 to 10:30 p.m. at Wieden + Kennedy, 224 N.W. 13th Ave.
Tickets are $20 in advance online or $25 at the door. Last year the event raised $23,000 to support the overall mission of the YWCA.
