Overlook market opens

North Portland residents are preparing for the inaugural opening May 18 of the Overlook Farmers Market.

Kaiser Permanente will sponsor the market at its Interstate campus, 3500 N. Interstate Ave. The market will feature fresh produce and run every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. through the end of September.

To kick off the event, Eric Schlosser, author of the popular book “Fast Food Nation,” will be at the market the first day and give a public lecture May 19 on the value of local produce and healthy eating.

The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Call 503-335-2466 to reserve free tickets.

Crime prevention workshops set

The East Precinct’s crime prevention team will hold two training sessions to help residents avoid becoming victims of residential burglaries.

Property crimes have risen dramatically in recent years in east Portland, in conjunction with the growing methamphetamine epidemic.

Crime prevention officers will offer tips to residents from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on both Thursday and May 17 at the East Precinct’s community room at 737 S.E. 106th Ave.
