Portland Tribune looks forward

The future of Portland is beginning to brighten.

The city faces many challenges: unprecedented metropolitan-area growth; a yet-unstable economy; a lack of agreement on how to fund and improve education; and a collection of numerous modern-day issues such as meth, increased poverty and health-care affordability. But Portland is looking forward.

Mayor Tom Potter’s Portland Community Vision Project and the ongoing development of a regional economic strategy by business leaders give us great hope. But it will take more than elected and business leadership to renew Portland and the region. It also will require citizen involvement.

The future of the Portland Tribune is equally bright.

And like the community it serves, challenges and great opportunities are ahead for this newspaper. We are prepared and able to meet those challenges Ñ and capitalize on the opportunities.

The Portland Tribune was launched in February 2001 as a free-circulation metropolitan newspaper. At the time, such an effort was rare in modern newspaper journalism. Since then, others have followed.

The Tribune is no longer a startup. It is a maturing newspaper with a defined business plan that describes a pathway to success. The plan is based upon the Tribune being the best nondaily newspaper in the nation and the newspaper that serves the Portland community with superior local relevancy and benefit. At the Tribune, we are deeply committed to that plan and our community.

The Tribune is all about Portland Ñ and the people, issues, neighborhoods, businesses and unique features that define Portland as a great community in which to live, work and play. In the past few months, we have launched many additions to the Tribune: the Weekend Life entertainment guide; Trib Town, a guide to Portland’s neighborhoods published each Tuesday; an expanded Web site; an expanded automotive section; and a number of interesting special sections about Portland.
