ADVERTISEMENTS
Pat Casey, who coached Oregon State to the NCAA baseball championship last month, was in South Bend, Ind., Tuesday interviewing for the vacant Notre Dame job.
Paul Mainieri, who coached Notre Dame to 533 wins in 12 seasons, accepted the post at Louisiana State two weeks ago.
Casey, 45, is 391-253-4 in 12 years as Oregon State coach, including 50-16 last season as the Beavers rolled to the College World Series title. The Newberg native is Irish-Catholic and has long admired the athletic tradition at Notre Dame. Casey’s base salary at OSU last season was $120,000; Notre Dame is offering a base of $300,000.
Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis has been working on a proposal that would give Casey, who has four years left on a five-year contract, an extension and more money.
