Beavers return to practice Tuesday with breakdowns to fix after loss to Boise State

Last week was a rough one for the Oregon State football program.

You know about the Beavers’ 42-14 loss at Boise State last Thursday. What you may not have heard is, three days earlier, prize 2006 recruit Gabe Miller re-tore the right Achilles’ tendon he originally injured in the spring.

The 6-3, 245-pound freshman from Lake Oswego, destined to redshirt this season as he rehabilitated his leg, was jogging across Tommy Prothro practice field last Monday when he heard a pop in the foot.

“I felt it a little bit,” Miller says. “It didn’t feel like the same pain as the first time, but I knew something was up. I kind of walked it off at the time.”

The next day, a doctor confirmed it was “pretty much the same injury” as the first time, Miller says. He will undergo surgery on Friday.

Miller is keeping a good attitude about it.

“It’s definitely a hassle,” he says. “Just when I thought I was coming back real good, now I have to start over at square one. But I’m not missing much football-wise. We’ll take rehab slower than the first time to make sure everything goes smoothly, but (the doctor) says I’ll have a full recovery. I’ll possibly be back for spring ball but definitely for next season. It’s a drag to have to go through all of this again, but as long as I get back on the field next season, it will all be worth it.”

Meanwhile, coach Mike Riley has watched video of his team’s debacle in Boise and has a few ideas about what happened.
