Offensive, defensive players find lots to like under Glanville

Three months ago, Portland State strong safety Michael Dorsey marched around the court at a Viking basketball game with a handmade sign that read, “Hire Coach Lupfer – or I quit.”

Dorsey and some teammates wanted defensive coordinator Greg Lupfer to succeed Tim Walsh as head coach, after Walsh left for Army.

Dorsey didn’t get his wish –but now it’s like a dream come true.

“Change is good,” he says.

Nothing against Lupfer, but the Viking players are more than happy after their first spring camp under their new boss, former NFL coach Jerry Glanville.

“We all think he’s a great coach,” Dorsey says of Glanville, a defensive specialist. “We’ve all bought into his defense.

“We wanted Lupfer at the time. We didn’t know a lot of the guys we heard would be interviewed, and we were rooting for the guys we knew. But this defense will really showcase our speed.”

And more.

“This defense can hurt people – and not just schematically but in terms of actual physical punishment,” says Dorsey, a senior from Putnam High. “There will be a chance for us to take a lot of kill shots. We’re going to fly around and hit people. We’re looking to take people out of games.
