MACKINS

Kenneth Mackins did not start a game last season, but at the moment he looks like Portland State’s top receiver, or at least the No. 1 deep threat, in Mouse Davis’ run-and-shoot.

Although Mackins had 24 catches for 424 yards and four touchdowns as the third wideout a year ago, he has hardly seen the ball in some games during his career.

“I love this offense. It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever been part of,” he says. “It’s a complete 180 from the old system. I remember a couple years ago we threw the ball maybe two times in one game.”

• Mackins and the Green team (mostly first-stringers) put on a show at Saturday’s spring game at PGE Park, beating the White team 49-7.

“We had to –we’ve got all these people coming out to see us because of what Mr. (Jerry) Glanville had told them,” Mackins says. Mackins led the receivers with four catches for 144 yards and one touchdown (a 54-yarder from Brian White).

Mackins (6-0, 185) owns a Big Sky 60-meter title, but he gave up track this spring to concentrate on football and learn the new offense, and work on catching the ball.
