SCHIMMEL PUTS ON SHOW AT CHILES CENTER

Sensational sophomore Shoni Schimmel had a spectacular game Friday in the Class 5A semifinals, with 31 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals to lead Hermiston to an 83-64 win over Wilsonville.

The Bulldogs (24-4) will play the Jefferson-Willamette at 6 p.m. Saturday for the state title.

Oregon City rallied in the second half to beat Sunset 52-42 in a Class 6A semifinal. Brittany Knighton had 18 points for the Pioneers (23-3), who will play the Southridge-Central Catholic winner at 8 p.m. Saturday for the 6A title.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC SURVIVES UPSET BID

Central Catholic beat Sheldon 50-48 in overtime Thursday night to advance to Friday's semifinals of the Class 6A girls basketball tournament at the Chiles Center.

A bloodied Kate Lanz hit two free throws with 14.7 left, and Sheldon's Taylor Ward missed a jump shot in the closing seconds.

The Rams (23-2) will play the Southridge-South Eugene winner at 8:15 Friday night. Oregon City (22-3) meets Sunset (19-8) in the other semi at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Lanz fell on her face after a collision with Sheldon's Theresa Brown, and suffered a cut lower lip and a possible broken nose and concussion. She was being evaluated Thursday night and her status for Friday was questionable.
