No goals, no victory for Timbers

Rochester holds Portland to 0-0 tie

Portland goalkeeper Ray Burse had to make just one save, as the defense held Rochester to four shots, but that wasn’t enough for a victory.

For the first time this season, the Portland Timbers failed to score a goal and did not leave PGE Park with at least three points in the standings.

The Rhinos (0-2-1) got their first point of the year for their 0-0 tie with the Timbers in a game watched by the announced crowd of 7,519 Thursday night.

Portland (3-0-1, 10 points) plays again Saturday night at Seattle, the defending league champion.

Versus Rochester, the Timbers’ best scoring chance came in the 78th minute, when forward Chris Brown pushed a 10-yard shot just wide.

Rochester got all of its shots in the first half and settled for the draw, which was Portland’s third shutout.

The Timbers finished with seven shots.

As promised, coach Gavin Wilkinson tweaked his lineup. Midfielder Kiki Lara made his first start of the season.

And new midfielder Arsene Oka, who came from the Ivory Coast in time for practice on Monday, came off the bench for a run of a few minutes at the end of the match.
