True Hoop blazes the blog trail

There are several things you probably should know about Henry Abbott. And if you don’t know Henry Abbott, well, you should — because his blog, True Hoop, is one of the best on the Internet, even before it was picked up by ESPN.com.

A native Portlander, Abbott was in town last week to visit his parents and was kind enough to let me trick him into an interview, surrounded by conversation about the NBA — his job and his passion. About Henry:

• He graduated from Portland’s Oregon Episcopal School at the age of 15. It’s not that he was in a big hurry to get out of high school, but he thought his family was going to move to England.

• The family didn’t go, and Henry decided to move on to either New York University or Colorado College. He liked NYU because it was in New York, but couldn’t quite figure out how he was going to pay tuition at perhaps the most expensive university in the country.

In the end, after an interview with a financial aid officer he’s never seen since that day in 1991, he emerged with more than $100,000 in scholarship money.

“Eileen Cunningham was her name,” says Abbott, 33. “When I graduated from NYU I looked for her to thank her, send her some flowers or something, but she didn’t work there any longer. There were 18 in the New York phone book and I called them all — but I couldn’t find the right one. I’ve never been able to thank her.”
