Less 'boys talk,' more sports would be nice

The demise of the Katy Brown-Kenny Vance morning show on 95.5 FM The Game wasn’t as much about performance — 10 weeks isn’t a sufficient trial, especially since Brown was on vacation for three of them — as economics.

Even Paul Allen-owned stations have a bottom line, and with advertising revenue down 11 percent from a year ago, management’s decision to trim overhead came sooner rather than later.

Vance and Brown will continue to have roles with the station — Vance joining Brian Wheeler as the Blazer broadcaster’s sidekick for an expanded 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. weekday time slot along with a potential role on the Fifth Quarter.

Gavin Dawson and Chad Doing, who had the hour leading into Wheeler’s show, move into the 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. weekday slot. Here’s hoping they keep the “boys talk” to a minimum and emphasize their strength – sports.

• With Houston’s acquisition of Ron Artest, Rick Adelman deserves a salary increase for combat duty.

Adelman is the official dumping ground for head cases, having worked effectively with Latrell Sprewell, Rod Strickland, Bonzi Wells, Chris Webber and others over the years.

• It’s great, I guess, that Oregon State football has new Nike uniforms. But isn’t it about time for Adidas to step to the plate with an offer to steal the Beavers away?

In Nike’s eyes, the Beavs will always play second fiddle to the Ducks. Given Phil Knight’s allegiances, it’s perfectly understandable. But it provides a perfect opportunity for Portland’s other shoe-and-apparel giant to swoop in and create some buzz by taking away the state’s other Pac-10 school.

So far, Adidas hasn’t shown the mettle.
