Oregon State quarterback Sean Canfield, playing last year against Utah, is continuing to have shoulder problems that could affect his availability this season.

CORVALLIS — It’s time to get concerned about Sean Canfield’s availability – not only for Oregon State’s Aug. 28 opener at Stanford, but for the 2008 season.
The junior quarterback is sitting out the majority of practice sessions because of a sore left throwing shoulder.
The 6-4, 225-pound Canfield had surgery in January to repair a torn labrum suffered two months before in a game against Southern Cal.
As the Beavers entered training camp on July 30, Canfield – who started nine games as a sophomore – said the shoulder was progressing nicely. On the second day of practice, however, he pulled himself out of drills.
“It was good the first day and a half,” says Canfield, who was expected to be the backup to junior Lyle Moevao this season. “I was making all the throws. Then (the shoulder) started hurting when I threw the ball. Since then, it’s just kind of felt the same. It’s not like a deep soreness, but it’s tight and hurts to throw.”
The OSU medical staff told coach Mike Riley soreness is expected at this point, and that the problems are muscular and not torn tendons and ligaments.
