Lacrosse takes forward Tim Campeau with first pick

The future of the Portland LumberJax began to unfold today as the team picked up five new players during the National Lacrosse League entry draft in Boston.

With the 12th pick of the first round, the Jax selected forward Tim Campeau. Then, Portland picked up transition player Matthew Yager with the 34th pick, defenseman Dayne Michaud with the 48th, goalie Matt Flindell with the 61st and forward Sean Robinson with the 74th.

From Notre Dame de Namur University, Campeau scored 30 goals and added 41 assists in 13 games of action this past season. The Coquitlam, British Columbia native will help complement the Portland offense that features the likes of Ryan Powell, Derek Malawsky and Peter Morgan.

“We came into the draft wanting a player who could step in right away," GM/coach Derek Keenan says. “We achieved that by picking up Campeau. He’s extremely athletic and played great at the (NLL) combine game."

Yager played for the Victoria Shamrocks of Canada’s Junior A System, where he scored 20 goals and added 30 assists this season. Yager was an intracle part of the Shamrocks run to the Minto Cup Final as he scored four goals and added five assists during the postseason.

“Matthew is an all-around good athlete," Keenan says. “He can play anywhere on the field and will help both the offense and defense.”
