Hillsboro broke loose from a halftime tie to down homefield St. Helens 21-7 Friday night in the Northwest Oregon Conference opener for both teams.
St. Helens (1-3) scored first, but Hilhi tied it up by halftime.
The Lions bogged down in their own territory most of the second half and had just 22 yards rushing in the last two periods against the Spartans, who improved to 3-1.
Hillsboro took the lead with a six-yard plunge from Mikkel Smythe midway through third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, a poor punt gave the Spartans the ball at the St. Helens 7-yard line. Michael Rodriguez scored three plays later on a five-yard run.
