SHERWOOD – The Sherwood High School football team had plenty to celebrate about.

First, there was the opening and dedication of the school’s new stadium – Aaron J. Contreras Memorial Stadium.

And, to cap off an already festive evening, the Bowmen ran to a 49-0 win over Liberty in a Northwest Oregon Conference opener played in front of a large, loud crowd Friday at Sherwood High School.

“This was a very important night for us,” said Sherwood senior tight end Chase Thorson, who was one of seven different Bowmen players to score a touchdown in the victory. “We really wanted to play well to honor the dedication of the stadium and Aaron Contreras (a Sherwood High School graduate who lost his life while on military duty in Iraq in 2003). We were extra motivated tonight.”

Liberty fell to 1-3 on the season with the loss. Sherwood, in addition to getting off to a winning start to NWOC play, moved to 3-1 on the season.

“This was a fun game and a fun night. It was really special,” Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence said. “We had a huge crowd, our band was great and there was electricity in the air. It was a night to remember.”

Although, Liberty might want to try and forget.

The Falcons found themselves facing an early deficit as Sherwood quickly marched 80 yards for a touchdown the first time it had the ball. Bowmen senior running back Tyler Dickson capped off the scoring drive with a 13-yard touchdown run around left end, giving the Bowmen a 7-0 lead with 8 minutes and 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

“This game meant a lot to us,” Dickson said. “We were really fired up at the beginning. Everyone came out and did what they were supposed to do.”

Thorson caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Bowmen senior quarterback Brayde Gough to up the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter.

“That was my first catch of the year,” Thorson said with a smile. “That was pretty nice.”
