Gresham’s Michael Mehlhaff intercepted a pass and returned it 51 yards late in the second quarter and Mickey Inns completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Justin Potter with three seconds remaining in the first half as the Gophers defeated Sandy 16-6 Friday at Sandy.
Leading 6-0 late in the first half, Sandy took over near midfield with hopes of adding to its margin. Instead, Mehlhaff stepped in front of a pass and took it all the way back for the touchdown.
“He stepped up when we needed a spark and came through with the big return which turned the momentum in our favor,” Gophers’ coach Mike Allison said.
Gresham added another touchdown just before halftime when Inns hit Potter going across the middle of the field, and Potter rolled into the end zone with three seconds on the clock.
Sandy gave up a safety on its first possession of the second half, and Gresham’s defense did the rest holding the Pioneers to 41 yards on the ground and shutting them out in the second half.
