Ackers, defense dominate Trojans in PIL 6A opener

In basketball, it’s good to have a 20-and-10 guy.

In football, Grant is blessed with very good 20 and 10 guys. That would be No. 20, Karl Acker, and No. 10, younger brother Kenneth Acker.

The Ackers, along with some solid line play and a stiff defense, gave Wilson double trouble and more in the teams' PIL 6A opener Friday night.

Grant, two-time defending league champs, pounded the Trojans 34-0 at Wilson.

Tailback Karl Acker busted a third-and-2 play for 58 yards and a touchdown the first time he touched the ball late in the first quarter, and the Generals were never headed.

Grant snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-3 overall, including a forfeit victory over Jefferson.

The Generals’ losses all came to teams at or near the top of their leagues, including defeats of three points at Westview and five points at Canby.

“We’re improving,” Grant coach Diallo Lewis says. “We’re getting there, but we have a lot of work to do.

“We came into the season pretty inexperienced, and our nonleague schedule was pretty demanding. It was good for us to go through that.”

Wilson (1-4) has lost four in a row after its victory over PIL 5A Madison.

The Trojans took Friday’s kickoff and drove to the Grant 30 before they were forced to punt.

Grant scored on its second possession and then took control, physically, of the game.
