Jesuit sets the tone, beats Westview

The No. 3 Crusaders force seven turnovers to open Metro season with 45-7 win over No. 8 Wildcats

ROCK CREEK — Its first drive stalled, Jesuit’s defense and special teams kicked it into high gear against Westview and the Crusaders never let off the accelerator.

Third-ranked Jesuit scored 24 points in a little more than three minutes late in the first quarter and cruised to a 45-7 win over the No. 8 Wildcats in both teams' Metro League opener Friday at Westview High School.

The Crusaders forced a fumble, returned an interception for a touchdown, recovered an onside kick and blocked a punt — all in the first quarter — then let running back Anthony Blake go to work for 225 yards and four touchdowns.

“Getting the turnovers was really key,” Jesuit defensive back Austin Cheek said. “It really got us pumped up. This win was crucial. We had to set the tone early.”

Jesuit did, and Cheek did his part.

Westview fumbled on the game’s first offensive play and Cheek came up with the loose ball. The Crusaders went on a 13-play drive but settled for Henry Bishop’s 23-yard field goal.

It was all touchdowns for Jesuit from there on out. On the second play of the Wildcats’ ensuing possession, Crusader defensive lineman Matt Dummer tipped a pass to linebacker Dylan Jackson, who took it back untouched 16 yards for the score.

Jesuit’s David Tabata then pounced on an onside kick. Two plays later, Blake followed his 46-yard burst with a 3-yard run for Jesuit’s second touchdown in 19 seconds.

A third TD was soon to follow after Cheek blocked a punt then covered the ball at the Westview 1-yard line. Blake promptly punched in the touchdown run.
