TIGARD – Give Newberg credit for finding a way to slow a high-scoring Tigard football team.
Namely, keep its offense off the field.
It was only a matter of time (and possession) until Tigard, which came into Thursday's matchup averaging nearly 46 points per game, took off – albeit not until the fourth quarter. The floodgates opened up then and there as Tigard scored three touchdowns in five minutes to bust out for a 38-7 Homecoming win at Tigard High School.
The host Tigers jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter, but ran just 16 offensive plays before halftime and led 17-7 heading into the fourth quarter. Newberg methodically moved the ball, controlling it 17 of 24 first-half minutes.
“They had a good game plan,” Tigard quarterback Ian McGetrick said. “We only had three possessions on offense in the first half and didn’t capitalize on some mistakes.”
“It was pretty frustrating,” added running back Tim Beckman. “We came out in the second half and took it to them big time.”
Did they ever. The host Tigers ran for 238 yards after halftime – 192 in the fourth quarter alone. In the second half, Beckman had 86 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just four carries, while Travis Howe ran six times for 82 yards and Steven Coburn added a TD run.
Leading 17-7 early in the fourth quarter, Tigard converted a risky 4-and-1 from its own 39-yard line and its ground game caught fire. After Howe’s 2-yard run on fourth, Beckman shot through the middle of the line and outran the defense, slipping through two dives at his ankles on a 59-touchdown run with 9 minutes, 42 seconds left in the game.
“I was thinking ‘I’m not going to go down. I’m going in,’” Beckman said. “There was no way I wasn’t scoring there.”
