Lincoln running back Nate Kirkpatrick uses the blocking of Louis Colasurdo and others to pick up good yardage in the Cardinals' 44-point win over rival Wilson.

Lincoln played a near-perfect game Thursday to win the Battle for Council Crest in near-record time.
The Cardinals scored touchdowns on all seven of their possessions in the first three quarters, added a defensive touchdown and held Wilson without a first down on its first three possessions in what turned into a 56-12 rout at Lincoln’s Mike Walsh Field.
Lincoln junior Henry Furman, making his second start at quarterback since Blake Rudolph broke an ankle, was all but automatic in the passing game. He completed 18 of 21 for 217 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, as Lincoln built a 35-6 lead.
Receivers DeAndre Taylor and Ryan Lacey had big games, as running back Nate Kirkpatrick, the offensive line, kicker Scott Strand and the Cardinal defense.
D-lineman Andy Fish opened the second-half scoring by intercepting a fourth-down pass and taking it back 68 yards for the TD that made the score 42-6.
“I think it’s our best overall game, as a team,” Lincoln coach Chad Carlson says.
“The defense really played the game they needed to play, with a new quarterback on the other side of the ball for us.”
The 6-4 Furman hardly looked like a rookie.
He hit his first eight passes and had No. 9 right in the hands of Taylor, who dropped it.
Taylor made amends throughout the night, however, making three impressive touchdown catches from 16, 14 and 8 yards.
Lacey had the most receptions, seven, grabbing everything that came his way and keeping the chains moving with 80 yards in the air, all in the first half.
“We had a good week of practice and were just clicking,” Furman says of the Cardinal offense.
The game was so one-sided that Furman threw only one pass in the second half before giving way to sophomore QB Peter Williams, who also looked good.
Williams hit his first four attempts, finding Ryan Elliott from 12 yards for a touchdown on his first throw and hooking up with Eric Evans on a 41-yard play.
Furman, 175 pounds, also ran for scores of 1 and 8 yards.
“I’m kind of a lanky guy,” he says, “and people don’t expect me to run.”
The Cardinals improved to 2-0 in PIL 6A play, tied for first with Grant, which won 42-28 at Franklin on Thursday.
Lincoln is 5-2 overall.
Wilson fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in PIL 6A.
The Cards were looking for revenge, after losing 34-28 at Wilson a year ago.
“They beat us in all facets of the game last year,” Carlson says. “I spent a lot of time this week, trying to get us ready and think of what would work against them.”
With the win, Lincoln has a 6-5 edge in the series since 1998.
