ROCK CREEK – It’s been a tough three weeks for Westview.
Friday provided three more tough quarters for the Wildcats, who came into their Homecoming game against Sunset having lost three straight – all to ranked opponents.
The fourth quarter brought change as Westview scored three unanswered touchdowns to earn a 28-7 victory over the Apollos. The win was the Wildcats’ (4-3 overall) first in three Metro League games and a big boost to their playoff aspirations.
But it provided more than help in the Metro standings.
“We needed this for confidence,” said Westview quarterback Josh Hill, who ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. “It was big for us. We just needed this boost. Now we’re back in it.”
The Wildcats drew even with Sunset (4-3 overall) at 1-2 but gained the tiebreaker edge for the league’s fourth and final playoff spot with two games remaining.
“We knew we had to come out and win,” said Westview senior David Aguilar, who ran for a game-high 131 yards. “We know what we’re capable of. We’re young, but we’re doing what we can to get better as a team.”
The Wildcats got better as Friday’s game at Westview High School wore on. Tied 7-7, the Wildcats stopped Sunset inches short on a fourth-and-1 near midfield and came alive, scoring on their final three possessions.
It started with a fourth-and-1 conversion on a six-yard Aguilar run and continued when Hill tossed to Casey Kasai for 13 more yards.
Two plays later – the first of the fourth quarter – Hill scrambled right and tossed to Christian Magdaleno for a 10-yard touchdown and 14-7 lead after Patrick Acosta’s extra point.
Sunset went three-and-out and Westview puts its ground game to work in another scoring march with Aguilar running seven times for 44 yards. Hill capped the drive when he bounced a quarterback keeper to the outside and followed a block from wide receiver Kasai into the end zone for a 12-yard TD run with 5 minutes, 39 seconds left.
The Apollos moved into Wildcat territory but lineman Timote Pongi pressured Sunset quarterback Michael Verbeek and Colin Forman picked off his pass, returning it 54 yards to the Apollo 32-yard line.
