Central Catholic moved into the driver’s seat in the race for the Mount Hood Conference football title with a thrilling 22-21 win over Barlow on Friday that went down to the game’s final seconds.
The Rams moved in front 22-15 late in the third quarter at PGE Park when running back Luke Onderko found the end zone for the third time, breaking loose for a 46-yard gallop.
With the clock dropping under the five-minute mark, Barlow came up with an answer. Jordan Raney bulldozed through the middle from 5 yards for a touchdown that made the score 22-21.
With the tying point just a kick away, Barlow coach Terry Summerfield called time out and sent his offense back onto the field. The Bruins were going for the lead.
The state’s leading rusher, Malcolm Johnson, took the handoff and headed around the left side, where he was quickly met by a crowd of red jerseys. He battled to stay on his feet for a moment before the Rams’ defense closed in and brought him down at the line of scrimmage.
“They had all the momentum at that point, and they have the best back in the state, so I wasn’t surprised,” Central coach Steve Pyne said. “Our kids just made a great play there at the end, and we were able to hold on.”
