David Douglas outlasted Gresham 24-14 on Friday night to keep its hopes alive for a home playoff game in two weeks.

Clinging to a 17-14 lead late in the game, David Douglas punter Brian Teague booted a 50-yard kick to back Gresham up to its own 28-yard line with 4:36 to play.

“It felt great,” Teague said. “I had teammates giving me high-fives, because that’s exactly what we needed. It set up the defense to make one more stop.”

And the Scots’ defense did just that, forcing Gresham into a three-and-out. Teague helped the cause by leaping up and knocking down a pass on second down.

The Gophers kicked the ball away with 3:57 to play, and David Douglas put the game into the hands of running back Greg Anderson, who picked up a big first down that allowed the clock to run under two minutes. But rather than run out the clock completely, Scots’ fullback Jonathon Byers broke free through the middle for a 24-yard touchdown to make the final 24-14.

The win sets up a showdown next week between David Douglas (5-1) and Barlow (5-1) with the winner earning second place and a home game to start the playoffs. Gresham secured the No. 4 spot for the playoffs despite the loss.

• In other MHC action:

Centennial got a long touchdown run by Kyle Saechao in the third quarter to help put away Hood River 35-22, giving Centennial the inside track for the last league’s playoff berth.

Barlow raced to a 41-0 halftime lead and hammered Sandy 41-13, while Central Catholic used 21 third-quarter points to pull away from Reynolds 42-6.
