Glencoe turns late Madison turnover into 15-12 second-round victory

Senators had 12-7 lead but couldn't hang on

A late turnover turned the game around at Madison High on Friday night.

A lost fumble by Madison led to a winning, 19-yard touchdown drive by Glencoe, as the Crimson Tide scored with 31 seconds left to win 15-12.

Madison had rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit to lead 12-7, and it looked like the Senators would punt to midfield or beyond with less than two minutes remaining.

But on third-and-11 from the Madison 18, Glencoe stripped running back Keenan Caples of the ball and recovered the fumble at the Senators’ 19 with 2:20 to go.

The Crimson Tide moved to the 1 in four plays and then spiked the ball on second-and-goal to stop the clock with 36 seconds remaining.

After calling a timeout to set up two plays, if needed, Glencoe scored on a third-down toss to running back Kyle Hogan.

A two-point conversion pass from quarterback Conor Lien to Hogan made the score 15-12, and Glencoe intercepted a Madison pass at the Crimson Tide 37 with 16 seconds left to seal the second-round, Class 5A victory.

“Glencoe’s a good football team and a good football program. There’s no room for error,” Madison coach Ken Duilio said. “We outscored them 12-8 in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough.”

Glencoe (9-3), a 2007 finalist, will play host next week to Hermiston, a 42-21 winner over Corvallis on Friday.

Madison finished its PIL 5A championship season with a 6-5 record.

“They’ve got some good players,” Glencoe coach Tim Duvall said of Madison.

Hogan scored both Crimson Tide touchdowns on 1-yard runs and carried the load, rushing 37 times for 173 yards.
