WALSH
ADVERTISEMENTS
Tim Walsh, former Portland State football coach, is the new head coach at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Walsh recently left Army, where he was offensive coordinator on the staff of former Portlander Stan Brock. Army relieved Brock of his head-coaching duties after two seasons.
Walsh replaces Rich Ellerson, who has become the head coach at Army.
Cal Poly was ranked No. 3 in the nation in 2008 before losing to Weber State in the first round of the national playoffs.
Walsh coached PSU from 1993 through 2006, overseeing the Vikings’ development from a Division II program to a Division I-AA power. He was 90-68 record (.570) during his 14 years there and took four teams to the NCAA playoffs. In 18 years as a collegiate head coach (four at Sonoma State University), Walsh’s teams were 117-82 (.588).

Shields is joining former Cal Poly coach Rich Ellerson at Army. So Walsh leaves Army when Brock gets fired. Ellerson takes Brock's old gig and takes Shields with him. Walsh takes Ellerson's old gig. One big game of musical chairs. How about that!

Can some Portland State fans give us some insight on what to expect offensively and defensively? Glad to hear he has west coast contacts, both at Portland State and Sonoma State.

defensively your gonna be ok
offensively expect an absolute snoozefest, Walsh is predictable and boring
he did enough to get his 6-7 wins but it got to the point where going to the games was just not worth it, I would rather watch paint dry

Yes, the previous post is right on. The defense will be sound, but it won't be enough to beat the quality teams.
On offense there is no creativity. It's run up the middle, run up the middle and make a five-yard pass. Boring, boring, boring and not very effective. You need a perfect 14-play drive with no penalties or mistakes to put any points on the board.
Glad to see one of Portland State's D I-AA West Coast foes will be more beatable.

Re: Tim Walsh becomes Cal Poly's head coach
What becomes of current CalPoly-SLO offensive coordinator and former OSU Beaver Ian Shields? I can't believe Walsh will run Shields' option offense.
