Gonzaga sounds plenty confident going into its NCAA Tournament first-round game against Akron, 4:25 p.m. Thursday at the Rose Garden.
The Zags got a No. 4 seed.
“There have been times in the past when we got seeds I think we didn’t’ really deserve,” Bulldogs senior forward Josh Heytvelt said Sunday. “I think we got exactly what we deserved this time. I think we match up with them (the Zips) really well. … I think we’re clicking on all cylinders and playing some of the best basketball we have since I’ve been here. I don’t think we could have a better matchup.”
Akron (23-12) of the Mid-American Conference is in the NCAA Tourney for the first time since 1985-86. The Zips are seeded 13th in the South Regional after winning the MAC tourney title.
Gonzaga guard Matt Bouldin said he felt great that the NCAA sent the Bulldogs to Portland for their first game, or two, if the Zags get by Akron.
“It gives us a chance to have a lot more Zag fans,” he said.
Bouldin also sees the Bulldogs as capable of making a strong run in the tournament.
