LOS ANGELES — Portland State earned a spot in the NCAA playoffs on Saturday, clinching the Pacific Coast Softball Conference championship with two games left in the regular season.
The Vikings swept a doubleheader at Loyola Marymount, winning 2-0 and 7-4.
It's the Vikings' second PCSC title, and the first under first-year coach Tobin Echo-Hawk, who said "I'm just so proud of all of these kids."
The Viks trailed 5-4 going into their last at-bat in the second game. They got hit five hits and four runs, after a foul out.
"The last inning was indicative of how our season has been," Echo-Hawk said. "We just fight and scrap, and we don't have one superstar, but a team where everyone contributes. It's a perfect ending to how our season has gone so far."
PSU and Loyola Marymount will play two more games on Sunday.
Portland State (28-23 overall, 14-4 PCSC) can be tied if Sacramento State wins all four games at Santa Clara this weekend, but the Vikings have the tiebreaker by winning three of four against the Hornets.
