BEVOS: Tacoma tops Portland 4-1

TACOMA, Wash. — The Portland Beavers showed some improvement on Wednesday. One night after Colorado Springs' Brandon Hynick pitched a perfect game against them, the Beavers hit safely eight times to match Tacoma in that category.

But that wasn't enough, as the Rainiers stopped the Bevos 4-1 at Cheney Stadium.

Doug Fister (4-1) scattered six hits and a run over seven innings to earn the win, and Randy Messenger earned his 14th save despite giving up two hits in the ninth inning. Chris Shelton had two RBIs on a pair of sacrifice flies.

Tacoma (37-42) trailed 1-0 when Mike Baxter scored on Val Pascucci's two-out single in the first.

Shelton evened the count in the bottom of the frame, and Tacoma went ahead for good in the third, when Jeff Clement scored from third on a fielding error and Shelton had another sac fly.

In the fourth, Clement added an RBI single.

Tim Stauffer (1-1) yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out two in five innings to take his first loss of the season as a Beavers.

Portland threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs before Jose Lobaton flew out.

The Beavers and Rainiers will meet again at 7 p.m. Thursday night. Will Inman (0-3, 7.27) will get the ball for Portland, facing Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-3, 6.67).
